A new way to understand the U.S. Hispanic audience, built not on who they are on paper, but on how they live, express, and navigate their culture.
1,975 RESPONDENTS · 6 CULTURAL COHORTS · 1 SPECTRUM OF CULTURAL EXPRESSION
WHY WE BUILT THIS
For decades, the Hispanic audience has been one of the most studied and most pursued in American media, and yet a persistent gap has remained between what the industry knows about this audience and what it truly understands.
The industry has always been good at the who, what, where, and when, Spanish-dominant or bilingual, foreign-born or U.S.-born, first generation or third. Useful, but binary. What has been missing is the why: how culture shows up in daily life, and what emotional and identity-based needs are being met through the content people choose.
The result is not a single story.
It is six.
98%
Spanish-led survey language
81%
Bilingual comprehension among language raters
61%
Watch free, ad-supported video, leading platform
88%
Trust brands that understand their community
what the study found
Six takeaways from 1,975 respondents.
1.
Spanish-led, but not language-isolated
81% of those who rated their ability show bilingual comprehension, language is contextual, not fixed.
2.
Culturally anchored, not confined
Identity is expanding, not shifting. Consumers keep strong Hispanic roots while integrating broader American influences, addition, not assimilation.
3.
Culture is actively lived
Not passively held. Consistent engagement across content, behaviors, and everyday routines makes culture a core driver of media consumption.
4.
Digitally fluent and free-first
A blended, non-linear ecosystem led by free ad-supported TV (61%) and YouTube (58%), moving seamlessly across paid streaming and social.
5.
Multi-genre and purposeful
Every major genre reaches 88% or higher, and each format fulfills a distinct role, from comfort and escape to identity and belonging.
6.
Trust is cultural, not linguistic
88% trust brands more when they show genuine understanding of their community. Cultural credibility, not language alone, earns attention and loyalty.
The six HISPANIC cultural cohorts
A spectrum from cultural preservation to passive resonance. Beneath a shared cultural foundation, each cohort has distinct needs and expectations for the content they consume. It's one of the most underutilized lenses in audience intelligence and the key to understanding why content resonates or falls flat.
Canela reaches audiences across all six Hispanic Cultural Cohorts, with the following distribution.
Cohorts were assigned using three composite Cultural Affinity Scores, measuring attachment, expression, and bicultural navigation, prioritizing how culture is lived and expressed rather than demographic proxies.
what it means
One audience, three strategic plays.
Serve
Preservers & Fluid
Deep, culturally rooted content that celebrates, preserves, and represents identity in the language and texture they live in.
Engage
Navigators & Remixers
Content that joins the cultural conversation, shareable, current, and expressive, moving comfortably between both worlds.
Reconnect
Adjacent & Reactors
Leverage emotional triggers like nostalgia, family, community, and the familiar to reactivate a cultural affinity that never truly left.
The question has never been whether Hispanic audiences are culturally engaged. It has always been how, and why, and what that means for the brands that want to be part of their lives.
